  • 10,000 MILO fans turn Kuching into a sea of green at Malaysia Breakfast Day 2026
    K kuchinghub

Over 10,000 people turned up for MILO Malaysia Breakfast Day 2026 in Kuching, turning the venue into a sea of green.

The Sarawak stop of the nationwide event was held yesterday (June 14) and drew families, school groups and community members from all walks of life — from Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Malay and Chinese communities.

Beyond the 3km fun run and activity booths, what stood out was how deeply MILO is woven into local family life.

"We grew up with MILO, and now our kids are carrying on the tradition," said one participant.

Sarawak South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the turnout reflected both cultural unity and shared lifestyle habits among Sarawak's diverse communities.

The event also featured fitness challenges, interactive booths and educational activities under the Nestlé for Healthier Kids programme, promoting balanced nutrition through Malaysia's "Suku-Suku Separuh" concept.

Following stops in Sabah and Terengganu, the MILO Malaysia Breakfast Day 2026 tour continues to Kuantan, Kelantan, before wrapping up in Putrajaya on July 12.

  • 🏠 A Weekend at Annah Rais Longhouse — Real Bidayuh Life Just Outside Kuching
    K kuchinghub

Annah Rais is the kind of place I would leave a whole morning for, not squeeze between two city cafés. The road from Kuching climbs past Batu Kitang into the hills, and the reason to keep going is not a staged “cultural village”: it is a living Bidayuh longhouse whose shared architecture still shapes how visitors move through the place.

📸 Source: Annah Rais Longhouse exterior

The longhouse story is unusually easy to see. Annah Rais is described as more than two centuries old, while the awah—the long open corridor—works as the social spine between family rooms. That makes the building itself the exhibit: a raised timber community, not a row of separate museum rooms. The nearby river, forest and hill road explain why this is best treated as a settlement connected to its landscape.

📸 Source: The central corridor (awah)

I would arrive in daylight, walk slowly, and ask before entering private areas or photographing residents. Day visits can be brief, but a homestay or arranged meal turns the route into a longer cultural exchange; tuak, bamboo-cooked food, craft demonstrations and short nature walks may depend on the host and the day. Nobody should arrive expecting a guaranteed performance or a theme-park timetable.

    📸 Source: Inside the longhouse

Allow roughly 1–1.5 hours from central Kuching by car, longer if rain slows the hill roads, and arrange the return journey before going. Fees, homestay packages, guides and which activities are available can change, so confirm with the community or current listing. Wear shoes for uneven ground, bring repellent and keep a little flexibility for weather. The road distance is the price of reaching a place where ordinary life is the point.

📸 Source: Scenery around the longhouse

Travellers who want a respectful, community-based Bidayuh encounter will find more here than a quick photo stop. Those wanting a polished visitor centre, fixed show times or guaranteed food may be disappointed. I would come with time, quiet manners and no expectation that residents owe the camera a performance; that is what lets the longhouse remain a home rather than become another backdrop.

    K kuchinghub

College students rescued a toddler found wandering alone along a dark roadside in Kota Samarahan at 2am on Saturday — now under police investigation.

A three-year-old girl was discovered alone in the Taman Berlian commercial area early Saturday morning by several college students. The students, who were heading home on a motorcycle after eating at a nearby eatery, noticed the child waving for help and turned back to check on her.

    K kuchinghub

  • Scam Alert: Facebook Home Repair Ads Target Sarawak — Victims Lose Thousands Across Kuching, Sibu, Miri & Bintulu
    K kuchinghub

If a Facebook ad offers cheap home repairs with free inspection — think twice. Victims across Sarawak are losing thousands.

The Sarawak Consumers Association (PPS) has sounded the alarm after receiving complaints from Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu about a suspected scam syndicate operating through Facebook ads.

The modus operandi? Ads offering free inspection and home repairs. Workers show up, do substandard or irrelevant work, pressure victims into paying via personal bank accounts — then disappear. The original problem remains unfixed.

    🚨 Reported losses:

    • Kuching: RM3,000 – RM4,200
    • Sibu: RM5,400
    • Miri: RM2,700
    • Bintulu: RM5,600

The workers are reportedly Chinese nationals. PPS has raised concerns over possible immigration law violations and public safety risks.

"We are not talking about isolated incidents anymore. Victims from several divisions — even Peninsular Malaysia — have come forward with nearly identical stories," said PPS president Dr Wynson Ong.

Some victims have filed police reports, but the cases were not classified as fraud since the workers physically showed up and did some work.

    📌 Tips to stay safe:

    • Verify the company's business address and license
    • Never pay via personal bank accounts
    • Get a written quote before any work starts
    • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

If you have been a victim, file a police report and contact PPS at 017-710 9299.

  • 🏮 Tua Pek Kong Temple — Kuching's Oldest Temple, 250 Years of Fire, War, and Faith
    K kuchinghub

Most mornings, the smoke from Tua Pek Kong Temple rises before the Main Bazaar coffee shops open. That is the first sign that this temple lives to a different rhythm than the heritage trail that surrounds it.

Standing at the corner of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, opposite the Chinese History Museum and a two-minute walk from the Kuching Waterfront, Tua Pek Kong Temple — also called Siew San Teng Temple — is widely regarded as the oldest Chinese place of worship in the city. No one knows the exact founding year, but Chinese temple associations and the Wikipedia entry date it before 1839, decades before James Brooke arrived in Sarawak. What started as a simple attap hut for early Hokkien and Teochew settlers grew through major renovations in 1856, 1863 and 1880 into the building you see today.

📸 Credit: 愛子棋枰 / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

What gives this temple its near-legendary status among older Kuchingites is what it survived. The Great Fire of 1884 burned most of old Kuching's wooden shophouses to the ground — the temple stood. Japanese bombs fell across the city in 1941 — surrounding buildings collapsed, the temple kept standing. Local folklore credits its feng shui: backed by a gentle hill, facing the Sarawak River, the position was chosen deliberately by the original settlers.

In 1871, the second White Rajah, Charles Brooke, issued the temple's first official land title — a rare recognition of a Chinese religious site by the Brooke administration. The document is still cited by local historians as one of the earliest land grants in Kuching's Chinese community records.

📸 Credit: Damian Pankowiec / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

The main hall is dedicated to Tua Pek Kong, the God of Prosperity, flanked by Guan Yin and Kshitigarbha bodhisattvas. Business owners from the surrounding shophouses stop by especially on the 1st and 15th of the lunar calendar. You will see them light incense, cast divination blocks and burn joss paper in the courtyard. The temple also used the name Chong Swee Heng (崇瑞兴) in earlier records, a name tied to the Hokkien—Teochew communal trust that managed it.

Inside, the carved wooden altar panels, ceramic roof ridges and red lanterns are not museum pieces — they are maintained by the same families whose grandparents worshipped here. The atmosphere is compact and layered: incense hangs in the air, the divination blocks clatter on the stone floor, and the occasional chant drifts from the side hall.

📸 Credit: Boonjinchung / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

You could walk past the entrance in fifteen seconds. Most people do, heading straight for the waterfront. But ten minutes inside — watching a shopkeeper ask for a blessing, noticing the soot pattern on the incense burner that has not moved in decades — tells you more about Kuching's Chinese community than any museum plaque.

A few practical notes if you do step in. Entry is free and the temple is open roughly from 6 am to 6 pm daily, though there is no strict enforcement. Late afternoon around 5 pm brings good light through the doorway. Dress respectfully — shoulders covered is the norm. Photography is fine, but pause when someone is actively praying. The busiest days are the 1st and 15th of each lunar month; quieter on regular weekdays. The temple sits about 200 metres from the main waterfront path, making it an effortless detour on any old-town walk.

📸 Credit: Flickr / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY)

Would this temple stand out if it were in Penang or Singapore? Probably not. But in Kuching, where the oldest surviving Chinese structure shares a block with a 1927 fire station and a colonial courthouse, it anchors the old town's timeline. You don't need 30 minutes here. Ten is enough — long enough to smell the incense and let the history catch up with you.

    K kuchinghub

Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

Damian Pankowiec / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

Boonjinchung / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)

    🥢 Sarawak Laksa — Anthony Bourdain 说是"breakfast of gods",在 Siniawan 吃别有一番风味。

  • Bintulu Customs Busts RM7.39 Million Smuggling Ring — Cannabis, Cigarettes, Liquor Seized
    K kuchinghub

Customs officers in Bintulu have smashed a major smuggling syndicate, seizing contraband worth RM7.39 million — including over 4.3kg of suspected cannabis.

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak carried out a series of raids between April and May, uncovering:

    • 7.2 million sticks of illicit cigarettes
    • 8,100 litres of untaxed liquor
    • 4.3kg of compressed cannabis
    • 2 vehicles linked to the smuggling ring

The biggest haul came on May 19 when officers raided an empty warehouse along Jalan Bintulu-Miri. Inside: 5.42 million cigarette sticks and 2,788 litres of liquor, worth RM5.44 million in total — including unpaid duties.

Three other raids at abandoned houses in Taman Seaview and a vacant unit at Plaza Li Hua uncovered another 1.79 million cigarettes and 5,300 litres of liquor.

    📍 Location: Bintulu, Sarawak
📰 Details: The syndicate used empty houses and warehouses as temporary storage before distributing to local markets. All four cases are being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 — offenders face fines of up to 20x the value of the goods or RM500,000, imprisonment of 6 months to 5 years, or both.

On the drug front, Customs intercepted four cannabis trafficking attempts through courier parcels addressed to Bintulu. Two local men were arrested. The cannabis cases fall under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 — which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Norizan Yahya urged the public to report smuggling via the toll-free hotline: 1-800-88-8855.

  • Korean Actor Cha Ji-hyuk to Film Romance Movie in Kuching — Filming Starts June 15
    K kuchinghub

A Korean Netflix star is coming to Kuching — and he's bringing a full film crew with him.

Cha Ji-hyuk, the actor from Netflix's hit action series Bloodhounds 2, will star in a brand-new Korean-Malaysian romantic comedy called "Distinct: Becoming Sarawak" — and the entire film will be shot right here in Kuching and across Sarawak.

    Filming kicks off June 15.

    What's the movie about?

It's a romance story built around the idea that differences can bring people together. The film explores love, healing and identity — set against Sarawak's city life, culture and landscapes.

The message? Sarawak's multicultural society, where people of different backgrounds live side by side while keeping their own identity, is the perfect backdrop for this kind of story.

    Who's involved?

Cha will star alongside Malaysian actresses Siti Nur Aishah Bee Md Nor and Shelyn Poh. The film is directed by Shin Ji-hwan, with costume design by Lee Chung Chung — the creative director of global fashion brand LIE, whose work has walked Seoul, New York, Paris and London fashion weeks.

The Korean crew has already been in Kuching since June 1 for pre-production, and local casting sessions were held earlier this year to recruit Sarawakian talent.

    Why it matters

This is more than just a movie. Producer Lee Sang Chan says the project is about building a bridge between Sarawak and international audiences — and his company plans to bring more Korean productions to Malaysia after this.

For Kuching's creative scene, this means jobs, exposure and the chance to put local talent on a global stage.

📍 Location: Kuching & across Sarawak
    🎬 Filming starts: June 15, 2026
