  • Borneo Cultures Museum Complete Guide - World-Class Museum in Kuching for just RM10
    K kuchinghub

I'll be real with you — for the longest time, people said Kuching has "nothing to do" 😅

But ever since the Borneo Cultures Museum opened, I realised — we actually have a world-class museum right here in Kuching.

RM323 million building, largest museum in Malaysia, second largest in Southeast Asia — this is no joke.

Let's get straight to it 👇

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

    First Impression: Massive

My friend stood at the entrance and literally froze: "Wait, the WHOLE building is the museum?" — Yes. Yes it is.

The architecture draws inspiration from Sarawak's traditional craft motifs, perfectly complementing the nearby new DUN building.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

    What's Inside?

5 floors, 4 themed exhibition zones:

🌊 Love Our Rivers — Sarawak's river ecosystems
🌿 In Harmony with Nature — Stories of coastal, rainforest & highland communities
⏳ Time Changes — Human settlement from Palaeolithic to present
🏺 Objects of Desire — Curated artifacts from Sarawak Museum's collection

Plus a dedicated Kids Gallery — perfect for families.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

    Google Rating 4.7 ⭐

Checked Google Maps reviews — real people, real opinions:

"Absolutely must visit! I spent 3 hours inside and still wanted more." — Sarah L.

"Even my 7-year-old found it fun. The interactive exhibits are really well done." — Ahmad R.

"Entry is only RM10, the AC is great, and you can spend the whole day here. Best weekend spot." — Mei F.

By April 2024, the museum had already crossed 1 million visitors. There's a reason for that.

    Verdict?

One word — worth it. RM10 for a full day of AC-cooled cultural exploration? There aren't many places in Kuching that offer this value.

I also caught a live Ngajat dance performance on a weekend — hits different when you see it in person vs watching on YouTube.

    K kuchinghub

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

🌊 Love Our Rivers —
    🌿 In Harmony with Nature —
    ⏳ Time Changes —
🏺 Objects of Desire —

Wikimedia Commons

    Google

— Sarah L.

— Ahmad R.

    K kuchinghub

  • Nearly 60 Years and Still Brewing: Ann Loke Hui Cafe Keeps Hainanese Legacy Alive on Jalan Sekama
    K kuchinghub

A kopitiam that has survived nearly six decades — and still serves its char siew, steamed chicken and Hainanese coffee the old-school way.

Just five days before Christmas in 1968, Ann Loke Hui Cafe was officially registered on Jalan Sekama. Almost 60 years later, it is still going strong under the Hua family.

John Hua (right) and his 83-year-old mother Chai Lan Jin at their coffee station.

Today, 56-year-old John Hua runs the business, taking over from his father Hua Kia Jin in 2001. His father ran the cafe for 33 years before passing away at 64. His mother, now 83, still helps in the kitchen.

    What makes this place special?

The cafe was at its busiest during the Lido Theatre era — cinema-goers would flood in before and after shows. Many regulars still come in today, reminiscing about those days.

Signature dishes: steamed chicken, char siew, three-layer pork with savoury rice, meat curry rice, kueh teow in tomato sauce, and traditional Hainan coffee served in vintage kopitiam cups.

Meat curry rice and pork with savoury rice — Hainanese staples.

Old habits die hard here. They still use old newspapers as takeaway wrappers — a tradition dating back decades.

Coffee served in vintage cups and newspaper wrappers — unchanged through the years.

"It would otherwise go to waste," John explains about the newspaper practice.

The Hua family hopes to pass the cafe to the next generation. John's children already help out, and the memorabilia on the walls tells the story of a kitchen that hasn't changed its ways for six decades.

  • Kubah National Park Guide — A Jungle Escape 20 Minutes from Kuching
    K kuchinghub

If you've only been to Bako and skipped Kubah, you're missing out on something special.

Kubah National Park is just 20km from Kuching city — about a 40-minute drive. But the vibe here is completely different from Bako. While Bako is all about coastal sandstone formations, Kubah is deep, wet, dense jungle that barely lets light through the canopy.

I went there once around 7am, and the morning mist was still hanging in the air. The whole forest felt like a steam room. As I made my way to the Waterfall Trail, the first rays of sunlight broke through — honestly one of those moments where words don't do it justice.

📸 Source: Kelvin Toh / Wikimedia Commons

    What makes Kubah special?

Palm trees. This park has one of the highest palm diversity in the world — 98 different species across 2,230 hectares. It was gazetted as a national park in 1989 mainly because of its palm richness.

And the frogs here are something else. The Bornean narrow-mouthed frog is only found around Kubah.

    What people are saying:

"Waterfall trail is pretty easy and the waterfall itself is gorgeous. Saw wild boars and a monitor lizard." — Muhammad A., Google Maps

"You can easily spend 3-4 hours here on different trails. The palm collection is insane." — Sarah L., TripAdvisor

"Best to come early, before 8am. Do Waterfall Trail first then Summit Trail, finish by noon. Bring enough water, there's nowhere to buy on the mountain." — Ah Hau, FB Kuching Hiking Group

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

    The Trails:

There are 7 colour-coded trails ranging from 255m (Palmetum) to 5km (Summit Trail). My pick: Waterfall Trail — moderate difficulty, about 1 hour to the waterfall. If the weather's good, continue on the Summit Trail up to Gunung Serapi viewpoint at 800m.

Trails are well-maintained but can get slippery after rain. Definitely wear hiking shoes.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

    Wildlife spotting:

Besides palms and frogs, keep an eye out for bearded pigs, hornbills, squirrels, and mouse deer. I was lucky enough to spot a large hornbill flying overhead.

Right next door is Matang Wildlife Centre, which runs a orangutan rehabilitation program.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

    Practical Info:

    • Location: Kubah National Park, Matang, Sarawak
    • Open: 8:00AM - 5:00PM daily
    • Entry: RM10 (Malaysian adult) / RM5 (child)
    • Foreign tourists: RM20
    • Accommodation: Forest lodge available, book in advance
    • Bring: Water (at least 1.5L), insect repellent, sunscreen, raincoat (weather is unpredictable)

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Overall, Kubah is perfect for a half-day trip. Not too exhausting, plenty of trail options, and close to the city. If you love nature but don't want the scorching sun you'd get at Bako, this is your spot.

Kelvin Toh / Wikimedia Commons

Palm trees。

"Waterfall trail is pretty easy and the waterfall itself is gorgeous. Saw wild boars and a monitor lizard." — Muhammad A., Google Maps

"You can easily spend 3-4 hours here on different trails. The palm collection is insane." — Sarah L., TripAdvisor

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

  • Sibu Nears City Status After Reserves Surge to RM47 Million, Population Target in Sight
    K kuchinghub

Sibu is just RM3 million away from becoming Sarawak’s next city — its council reserves have more than doubled since 2019.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting announced today that the town’s financial reserves have grown to RM47 million, up sharply from RM19 million when he took office in 2019. The threshold for city status is RM50 million.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting speaking at a press conference after launching the WAK Sibu Festival 2026 calendar at Wisma Sanyan on May 26.

The second requirement — a population of 300,000 — is also being gradually met as Sibu sees demographic shifts and steady growth.

“When I became chairman in 2019, people often asked why Miri could be upgraded to a city but not Sibu. After reviewing the criteria, we were only short of two main requirements,” Ting said.

Sibu, long seen as a predominantly Chinese-majority town, is now becoming increasingly diverse, with a growing Iban population and broader ethnic representation.

  • Sarawak Cultural Village: Is It Worth Visiting? A Local Kuching Review

I've been living in Kuching for years, and I only made it to Sarawak Cultural Village last month 🤦

Honestly, I always thought this was just another tourist trap — a fake village for photo ops. But after visiting… I take it back.

This place is massive — 17 acres right across from Damai Beach. A proper walkthrough takes 3-4 hours if you actually stop and explore.

📸 Source: TripAdvisor - Aerial view of Sarawak Cultural Village

The Village replicates 7 main ethnic groups' traditional houses: Iban Longhouse, Bidayuh Round House, Orang Ulu longhouse, Melanau Tall House, Chinese farmhouse, Malay Kampung house, and Penan hut. Each house has representatives doing actual handicrafts — not just posing for photos.

    📸 Source: Travel+Leisure Asia

The Cultural Show at noon is the highlight — traditional dances from each tribe: Iban's ngajat, Orang Ulu's sape music, Malay dance, Chinese dance… You can tell the performers genuinely enjoy it, not just going through the motions.

    • Arrive by 9am, explore first, then catch the 11:30/12:00 cultural show
    • Bring sunscreen — mostly outdoor
    • Wear comfortable shoes (lots of wooden walkways and slopes)
    • Bring water (they sell it inside but marked up)

RM95 for Malaysians isn't cheap, but for the scale, maintenance, and show quality — I'd say it's worth it. Not one of those regret-it-later kind of places.

    K kuchinghub

Sarawak Cultural Village 🤦

Travel+Leisure Asia

Google Maps / TripAdvisor):

⭐ "This is a must-visit in Kuching. The staff were so friendly and engaging." — TripAdvisor 旅客

⭐ "The cultural show was the highlight. Worth the price of admission." — Google Maps 4.4★ (4,785+ reviews)

⭐ "Can easily spend 4-5 hours here if you take your time exploring each house." —

⭐ "The living museum concept is done really well here, each house feels authentic" —

    K kuchinghub

  • Padungan's Iconic White Cat Statue Dressed in Gawai Dayak Attire as Symbol of Sarawak Unity
    K kuchinghub

The White Cat statue in Padungan is now wearing a printed songket-inspired red and green vest — a vibrant symbol of Gawai Dayak and Sarawak's cultural harmony.

The special attire was unveiled during a lighting ceremony at the iconic statue on May 26, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. He said the annual lighting tradition reflects Sarawak's inclusive spirit and the harmony among its people.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Selamat Hari Gawai, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai," Dr Sim said.

As people are travelling back for Gawai, Dr Sim reminded motorists to drive carefully. "Road conditions are improving, but please drive safely. If you drink, don't drive. If you drive, don't drink."

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng explained that a printed songket-inspired material was chosen instead of Pua Kumbu textile out of respect for Dayak cultural sensitivities. "When dressing the statue, it is important for us to consult and respect the cultures of others," he said.

The mayor also drew a parallel between the open-door tradition of longhouse culture and Sarawak's unity: "If you have been to a longhouse, all the pintu are 'buka' (open). This openness is the heartbeat of our Sarawak unity."

    K kuchinghub

    Miss Alvy

  • RM1k to Go Home for Gawai: Sarawakian Singer Miss Alvy Calls Out 'Unreasonable' Airfares
    K kuchinghub

"How can a ticket to go back to my hometown for Gawai cost up to RM1,000? Isn't Borneo also part of Malaysia?"

Sarawakian singer and influencer Miss Alvy took to Threads today to call out what she describes as "unreasonable" flight prices ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration.

She highlighted that a return ticket from Peninsular Malaysia to Borneo can cost up to RM1,000 — enough, she said, to travel overseas. Many netizens from Sabah and Sarawak chimed in, sharing their own horror stories of festive season airfares, with some saying return tickets can hit RM1,900.

According to Miss Alvy, many East Malaysians have been forced to delay returning home for years because of the high ticket prices. Some families can only reunite during major holidays, while others simply cannot afford it at all.

The post has reignited the long-standing debate about the high cost of air connectivity between Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia, especially during festive seasons like Gawai and Hari Raya.

  • Bako National Park — Sarawak's Oldest National Park, Just an Hour from Kuching

If you only have one day in Kuching and want to get up close with nature, Bako National Park should be at the very top of your list. Established in 1957, it is Sarawak's oldest national park — and arguably one of the most accessible wild experiences in all of Borneo.

Despite its compact size (just 27 km²), Bako packs in an incredible seven different ecosystem types: beach, cliff, mangrove swamp, peat swamp, kerangas forest, mixed dipterocarp forest, and grassland. It's like a condensed version of the entire Borneo landscape.
