MBKS probes dry hose, locked-away extinguishers after Stutong Market vehicle fire Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is investigating concerns over emergency firefighting equipment at Stutong Market after a vehicle was destroyed by fire on Thursday morning, with a dry fire hose and missing extinguishers hampering efforts to put out the blaze. Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said during his ShallWeeTalk live session on Saturday that the council had directed the relevant personnel to investigate and submit a report. He acknowledged that several fire extinguishers at the market had gone missing, calling it an internal security issue. Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, who was distributing N95 masks at the market when the fire broke out, posted on social media that the fire hose had no water supply and that extinguishers were locked inside an office and not readily accessible. He urged MBKS to inspect all firefighting equipment at markets under its jurisdiction. Wee said it would be premature to draw conclusions before the investigation is completed, adding that the cause of the fire itself must also be established. The fire started around 5am on Sept 3 and was eventually extinguished by firefighters. MBKS councillors have visited the affected hawker to check on their well-being and are assisting with police reports and other matters.

MBKS is preparing a 200-metre reinforced-concrete box drain to improve flood protection along Jalan Padungan and Jalan Chan Chin Ann. The proposed drain would measure 1.2 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep. Survey work, possible utility relocation, road and footpath reinstatement, plus traffic and safety arrangements are part of the plan. The two roads and nearby Jalan Abell area have recurring flash floods during intense rain. MBKS said the existing network cannot handle high stormwater volumes easily, but work in this built-up city-centre area must be designed around businesses, roads and underground services. The project is not at construction stage yet. A consultant must first complete the plans and technical documents before MBKS starts the tender process. Drivers and businesses should expect temporary traffic arrangements only when work eventually begins.

A farmers’ market, smart poles and an inclusive playground have put three Kuching South City Council projects on the Top 29 finalist list for the 2026 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Awards. The Kuching Natural Farmers Market was shortlisted under SDG 8 for supporting local farmers and small producers. The MBKS Smart Pole Initiative sits under SDG 11 for park safety, environmental monitoring and management, while Ausome Park is under SDG 10 for play spaces that children of different abilities can use together. All three are existing community programmes. The announcement is a finalist placing, not a final award or a new rollout; the winners have yet to be announced.

A Kuching South smart pole displayed an outdoor-activity message even while its API reading showed hazardous air, MBKS said on Tuesday. The council attributed the mismatch to a dashboard programming limit. The numerical reading remained accurate, but the advisory function had only been configured up to API 450. When the reading went higher, the system defaulted to the message used for the 0–50 healthy range. MBKS said it has told the system provider to rework the dashboard so the number, gauge and warning match official API bands, including exceptionally high readings. Until that update is confirmed across the system, residents should use the official API reading as the reference and avoid outdoor exercise once the air reaches hazardous levels.

Kuching South residents whose homes were damaged by recent strong winds can register with MBKS for possible disaster assistance. MBKS is collecting each household's full name, MyKad number, address, contact number and photographs of the damaged roof. The council will compile the applications and send them to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), after its councillors, community leaders and staff help with forms and site assessments. Residents can register through MBKS WhatsApp at 011-1988 5962 or by email at [email protected]. Councillors and community leaders are also helping reach households, including residents who were away when the council visited. SDMC has yet to announce any assistance amount or approval outcome. Affected households should keep clear damage photos and supporting details ready when they contact MBKS.

Targeted widening has started along Jalan Urat Mata as MBKS works on the route's busiest bottlenecks. The Kuching South City Council said work began on Aug 11 and is scheduled for completion on Jan 10, 2027. The revised plan covers about 600 metres on the right side from the Jalan Song junction towards Lorong 7, plus another 300 metres on the left from Lorong 3 towards Jalan Wan Alwi. The original proposal covered the entire 1.32-kilometre road, but the first phase is now focused on sections where extra lane space can make the biggest difference during peak hours. The work will stay within the existing 25-metre road reserve and does not require land acquisition. Jalan Urat Mata links Jalan Wan Alwi and Jalan Song, serving nearby homes, shops and major commercial areas. Motorists should slow down and watch for work zones as construction continues.

MBKS is working with developers to arrange temporary accommodation and urgent repairs for Kuching South households damaged by Tuesday’s storm. Residents who cannot safely remain at home are to be housed temporarily first. The council then plans to cover exposed sections, inspect the damage and work out the scope and cost of repairs with the developers. At Kampung Tabuan Dayak, roofing sheets torn from a nearby apartment block hit one home at about 3pm on Aug 25. A mother-in-law and child who were inside escaped unhurt. Fallen trees and other storm damage were also reported around Kuching, but the latest update did not say how many homes need assistance or when all repairs will be completed. Anyone facing an unstable roof or loose building material should keep clear of the affected area, especially if more rain arrives. Call emergency services if there is immediate danger, and do not enter a damaged structure until it is safe.

Kuching's Air Pollutant Index (API) reading reached 175 at 8am on Aug 24, putting the city in the unhealthy range. Five Sarawak locations recorded unhealthy readings at 8am: Serian (189), Kuching (175), Samarahan (170), Sri Aman (158) and Bintulu (108). Kuching's reading was 175, down slightly from 177 at 4pm on Sunday. An API reading of 101–200 is classed as unhealthy, while 201–300 is very unhealthy. These are 8am readings, not a live noon update, so check the latest official reading before planning outdoor activities. Kuching South City Council (MBKS) distributed face masks at Kenyalang Market and Sungai Apong Market on Aug 23. Children, senior citizens and people sensitive to poor air quality should cut down unnecessary outdoor activity, wear a suitable mask, stay hydrated and seek medical attention if they have breathing difficulty. For people who must go outdoors, the useful detail is fit: a well-sealed N95, KN95 or KF94 offers better particle protection than a loose face covering. Children, older people and anyone with asthma or heart or lung conditions should keep outdoor exertion down while the reading remains unhealthy.

When the city feels too busy, I like the idea of a park that asks for almost nothing: a short ride, a shaded walk, somewhere for children to burn off energy, then dinner in Padungan. MBKS Garden Park fits that everyday Kuching rhythm better than the word “attraction” suggests. [image: 1787105415154-img0.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415264-img1.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415401-img2.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415517-img3.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS The lake, paths, playground and open green space make it useful for a 30–60 minute reset. I would come before the heat builds or after 5pm, especially with older family members or young children. It is free and there is no ticket queue, but lighting, parking and individual activity areas can change with municipal arrangements. The MBKS site is the place to watch for council notices; the current place listing helps with location, but a quick check still makes sense before a special outing. This suits travellers staying around Padungan or the city centre who want a local pause between meals. It is not the choice for a dramatic viewpoint, curated botanical collection or full day of activities. Midday sun, mosquitoes or a busy festival period may also make it less relaxing, so water, repellent and flexible timing help. The park is around the Jalan Padungan/MBKS area, with public parking nearby but no guarantee of an easy space during events such as Kuching Festival. With e-hailing, drop at the MBKS/Kuching Park side and walk from there. Allow an hour, then continue to Padungan for food or return to the city centre. For a quiet morning loop, an evening jog or a family breather, it earns its place. For a once-only Kuching highlight, keep your expectations smaller and let it be the restful stop between bigger plans.

A severe thunderstorm swept through Kuching on Saturday evening, bringing rain that eased the haze but leaving damage across the city. MBKS said response teams were sent out after roofs were blown off, trees were uprooted, electricity cables were affected and flash floods were reported in several areas. At Taman Riverview in Pending, a fallen tree blocked the road. A local Kapitan and his wife began clearing it with a chainsaw before being warned about the safety risks. Bomba also attended incidents at Jalan Chong Chin Kong and Jalan Ming Ching near Jalan Foochow. As a safety measure, MBKS ordered stalls at the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion to stop operations after strong winds damaged about half of its canopy. Residents affected by the storm can notify MBKS, while the public is advised to avoid exposed roads during thunderstorms. The danger does not end when the rain stops: fallen trees, loose roofing, flooded roads and damaged cables can remain hazardous. Residents should avoid affected routes and report damage to the council or emergency services rather than entering the area to take photos.

"Don't dirty public spaces to beautify your home" — MBKS warns of RM2,000 fine for illegal dumping. [image: Screenshot-2026-08-08-153940-1.png?resize=696%2C393&ssl=1] Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has issued a stern reminder: illegal dumping of garden, construction and household waste carries a RM2,000 compound, with possible court action. Speaking during his ShallWeeTalk live session today, Wee said the council continues to find waste dumped along roadsides, in drains and public spaces despite repeated warnings. "Do not make your own surroundings look beautiful by turning public spaces and grass verges into dumping grounds. That is wrong and reflects a lack of civic consciousness," he said. The fine cannot be waived. If CCTV or neighbour statements capture the offence, the case can proceed to court. Wee also highlighted household rubbish — including used cooking oil bottles — being found in drains: "How did these items end up in drains when they are supposed to be thrown into bins? They certainly did not walk there on their own." Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh says KL can learn from Kuching Festival's 'food ecosystem' — from farm to marketing Yeoh visited the Kuching Festival grounds on Aug 7 together with DBKL Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud and his team, hosted by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. This was her second visit. She said her daughters first discovered the festival on TikTok during SUKMA and encouraged her to come. "I felt the concept was very unique and very vibrant. There is a lot of youth and young people's energy, and it was very clean," she said. After taking over the Federal Territories portfolio, Yeoh said she told DBKL its officers should visit Kuching to study how the festival was organised and how fresh ideas from young people were incorporated. "We are here to look into the entire ecosystem, not just this food festival, but also the ecosystem from farm to marketing. How you actually activate so many different industries based on one concept of just promoting food culture here." She cited MBKS' Natural Farmers Market as another initiative that could provide learning opportunities for KL. DBKL Mayor Fadlun described the visit as a good experience: "This is something new for us in Kuala Lumpur. Maybe we can learn from Kuching South to adopt this concept." Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has proposed regular meetings among UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy in Asia to strengthen cultural ties and culinary exchange. The proposal came as delegates from China's Quanzhou, Chaozhou, Chengdu, Macau, Eastern Guangdong, and Iloilo, Philippines, visited the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion at MBKS Jubilee Ground during the Kuching Food Festival 2026. "Food reflects a community's history, culture and identity. Although we come from different countries and cultures, our shared passion for gastronomy has brought us together as one family," Wee said. The mayor said closer cooperation among Asian gastronomy cities would help showcase the richness of Asian culinary traditions while encouraging more visitors to experience each city's unique food culture.
