Lundu and Serian recorded hazardous air quality early Tuesday, as haze conditions worsened across Sarawak. Readings at 6am put Lundu at API 329 and Serian at 303. Kuching was at 241, with Samarahan at 239, Tebedu at 242, Sri Aman at 230 and Lubok Antu at 212 — all in the very unhealthy range. The latest figures mark a sharp deterioration from Monday: Lundu had been at 260 at noon, while Serian rose from 222 to 303. Schools in 12 districts — including Kuching, Padawan, Bau, Lundu, Samarahan and Serian — are closed from Sept 7 to 11. Lessons continue through home-based teaching during the closure. Kuching remained in the very unhealthy air-quality band on Sunday morning, even as readings improved in four other Sarawak areas. Sarawak wants cloud-seeding missions to continue through September whenever the weather allows, as dry conditions put dams and raw-water sources under pressure. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the state was discussing more frequent operations with the federal government. The request is conditional: aircraft can only seed clouds that meet the required atmospheric conditions. Sarawak’s haze is already changing travel plans, with the state recording a dip in tourist arrivals as air quality worsens. Tourism Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the decline was noticeable and could continue while the haze persists. Serian remains under haze emergency for three more days as API drops, workplaces allowed to operate The Serian Division will stay under a state of emergency for the next three days despite an improvement in air quality, with businesses and government offices permitted to continue operations under health precautions. Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said it is monitoring the situation closely after Serian's Air Pollutant Index peaked at 521 on Sept 4. By 10am on Sept 5, the reading had dropped to 334, still within the hazardous band of 301-500. SDMC warned that API levels could fluctuate depending on wind direction and hotspot activity. A full assessment will be made after the three-day monitoring window before any recommendation is submitted to Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on whether to lift or extend the emergency. Industries, plantations, construction sites and quarries in the affected area may continue operating provided all necessary health safeguards are in place. The public has been advised to avoid outdoor activities where possible, and to wear N95 or at minimum 3-ply masks when going out. Sarawak Forestry steps up patrols in fire-prone areas as haze and heat threaten wildlife Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has intensified monitoring in high-risk forest areas as the prolonged hot, dry and hazy weather increases the risk of forest fires and puts additional pressure on wildlife. SFC general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran said field patrols are being carried out particularly in peat forest areas and areas close to human activity, with hotspot detection technology used to identify early signs of fire. Totally Protected Areas (TPAs) that have previously been affected by fires are receiving extra attention. Among the sites being closely monitored are Bako National Park, Kuching Wetland National Park and Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary in the Kuching region, as well as Sibuti Wildlife Sanctuary, Lambir National Park, Niah National Park and Mulu National Park in the Miri area. An RMAF C-130 took off from the Kuching air base on Sept 3 for Sarawak’s third cloud-seeding operation this year, turning an uncertain schedule into an actual mission. The three-day window runs through Sept 5. Crews are prioritising the Batang Ai, Murum and Bakun hydropower dams, then 13 water catchments across Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit and Limbang. Seeding can only happen when suitable moisture-rich clouds form between about 5,000 and 7,000 feet. That condition remains the limit. Earlier forecasts had found clouds unsuitable and winds pushing them out to sea; even after take-off, not every target is guaranteed to be seeded or receive rain. Officials said reservoir levels were lower than usual but still under control. The mission is meant to replenish dams and catchments, with cleaner air as a possible benefit rather than a promised result. Its effect will have to be measured through subsequent rainfall, reservoir levels and API readings — the flight itself does not guarantee immediate rain for Kuching.

Kuching's API was 285 at 2pm Thursday, putting the city in the Very Unhealthy band as haze continued to affect Sarawak. Residents planning a long stretch outdoors should check the newest reading rather than rely on the 2pm figure. Children, older people, pregnant women and people with heart or respiratory conditions face higher risk. Anyone who develops breathing difficulty should seek medical care. Lubok Antu posted the 2pm watch's most severe reading at 469, rated Very Hazardous. IPD Serian was at 370 and Lundu at 305, both Hazardous; Samarahan recorded 271 and Sri Aman 282, joining Kuching in the Very Unhealthy range. Miri's 100 was Moderate. The API is a 24-hour running average based on the dominant pollutant, not a single moment outdoors: 201 to 300 is Very Unhealthy, 301 to 400 Hazardous and 401 to 500 Very Hazardous.

Sarawak’s Sept 3–5 cloud-seeding window does not guarantee rain: the latest federal update found the available clouds unsuitable and moving out to sea. The update on Sept 2 said prevailing winds were pushing cloud groups towards the South China Sea. Seeding them would risk producing rain away from the areas facing haze and low water reserves, so any flight remains subject to MetMalaysia’s assessment. NADMA’s plan covers eight Sarawak dam areas — Batang Ai, Bakun, Murum, Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin, Sika and Matang — with MetMalaysia and the Royal Malaysian Air Force involved in the operation. At 4pm on Sept 2, Serian and Kuching recorded hazardous API readings of 325 and 309 respectively, giving the proposed operation an immediate public-health context. There was no confirmation in the latest reports that a seeding flight had taken off or been completed. The operation may proceed within the planned window only if later cloud and wind conditions are suitable.

Open burning along the Sibu Jaya bypass has been ordered to stop after a Tuesday fire was linked to nearby farming activity. Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) said its chairman inspected the site with Natural Resources and Environment Board officers and firefighters. Sibu’s Air Pollutant Index was 327 — in the hazardous range — when the fire was reported. NREB officers told the council that people believed to be involved ran into nearby bush when enforcement personnel arrived. No suspect has been identified publicly and no charge has been announced. SRDC will ask the Land and Survey Department to verify the affected plots and their registered owners. Landowners along the bypass have been urged to check for unauthorised farming, while the council plans a multi-agency meeting over repeated burning in the area.

A small rise in respiratory infections is showing up in Sarawak’s haze surveillance, while asthma numbers remain broadly stable statewide. Fifteen sentinel health facilities averaged about 1,752 upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) cases a week in recent weeks, compared with roughly 1,717 at the start of the year. The clearest spike came in mid-August: the Southern Zone recorded about 1,250 cases, the Central Zone more than 1,000 and the Northern Zone nearly 400. Between January and the end of August, the same facilities logged 64,688 URTI cases and 6,156 asthma cases from about 694,800 patient visits. Weekly conjunctivitis cases also rose from an average of 17 to 21. Sarawak General Hospital saw more asthma patients on several days in August, but the wider monitoring has not found a sustained statewide surge. The Sarawak Health Department is continuing surveillance and keeping medicines, equipment and staff ready. During smoky periods, residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity, wear a suitable mask when they need to go out, and seek treatment for breathing difficulty, a persistent cough or eye pain.

Passengers flying between Borneo destinations should be ready for schedule changes as AirBorneo reviews operations amid Sarawak's worsening haze. The airline said some intra-Borneo flights may be retimed or cancelled for safety reasons, with further announcements to be made if scheduled services change. It urged passengers to check its latest updates before heading to the airport. The warning comes as hazardous API readings spread across Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman and Sarikei on Tuesday. That does not mean every flight is disrupted: the advisory describes possible changes while assessments continue. Travellers from Kuching should keep their booking details handy, allow time to check for notices and confirm the status of the specific flight rather than rely on general haze reports.

A Kuching South smart pole displayed an outdoor-activity message even while its API reading showed hazardous air, MBKS said on Tuesday. The council attributed the mismatch to a dashboard programming limit. The numerical reading remained accurate, but the advisory function had only been configured up to API 450. When the reading went higher, the system defaulted to the message used for the 0–50 healthy range. MBKS said it has told the system provider to rework the dashboard so the number, gauge and warning match official API bands, including exceptionally high readings. Until that update is confirmed across the system, residents should use the official API reading as the reference and avoid outdoor exercise once the air reaches hazardous levels.

Ten Sarawak monitoring stations were still in the hazardous band at 2pm on Tuesday, even after Kuching eased from 407 in the morning to 374. NREB's 2pm table recorded Lubok Antu at 390, IPD Serian at 389, Kuching at 374, Kanowit at 364, Tebedu at 353 and Lundu at 351. Sarikei was at 349, Samarahan at 339, Sibu at 331 and Sri Aman at 327. All ten readings were above the hazardous threshold of 300. No station was above 400 in the 2pm update, but that was not a clear-air signal: Kuching had reached 407 earlier, while Serian was also above 400. API is a 24-hour running average, so residents should check the latest reading before outdoor activity and cut strenuous exercise while conditions remain hazardous.

Kuching’s air quality worsened again on Monday afternoon, with the API reaching 366 at 4pm. Samarahan stood at 350 and Serian at 445, while Lundu reached 405. All four readings were in the hazardous band. The same 4pm update placed Tebedu at 399, Lubok Antu at 396 and Sri Aman at 334, also hazardous. Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah were in the very unhealthy range at 277, 243 and 216 respectively. API readings move through the day, so the afternoon figures should not be treated as a forecast for tonight. Sarawak’s disaster committee said there was no need for an emergency declaration yet. If a local reading reaches 500, the matter would first be taken up with the National Disaster Management Agency, and any emergency would apply only to the affected locality—not the whole state. Offices, schools and activities in that locality would be required to close under such a declaration, apart from essential services. For areas at API 201 and above, residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure and wear an N95 mask when going out, or at least a three-ply mask if one is unavailable. Children, older people and those with breathing problems should take extra care and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

Seven Sarawak locations were in the hazardous API band by 8am on Monday, Aug 31, including Kuching and Samarahan. Kuching recorded 317 and Samarahan 330. Serian was the highest at 476, while Tebedu (385), Lubok Antu (367), Lundu (349) and Sri Aman (326) made up the other four hazardous readings. The same NREB table placed Sarikei at 267, Sibu at 219 and Mukah at 214 — all in the very unhealthy range. An API reading of 301 or above is classified as hazardous, while 201–300 is very unhealthy. These readings can change during the day. Residents should check the latest official update before making outdoor plans. Children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and anyone with serious breathing difficulty or chest pain should seek medical attention.

At 10am on Aug 30, Serian’s API reached 385 and Samarahan’s 316 — both hazardous. Kuching and Tebedu were at 297 each, just below the hazardous threshold of 301 and within the very unhealthy band. Lundu and Lubok Antu were both at 236, while Sri Aman recorded 215. Ten other Sarawak locations were unhealthy, including Sarikei at 196, Sibu at 189, Bintulu at 182, Samalaju and Mukah at 173, Kapit at 160, Miri at 157, ILP Miri at 153, Bario at 119 and Lawas at 106. Limbang was the only listed location in the moderate range, at 92. The NREB figures are a time-specific snapshot and can change with weather and smoke movement. Check APIMS before making outdoor plans and reduce prolonged exposure while levels remain high, especially for children, older adults and people with respiratory or heart conditions.
