Kuching motorists face additional lane restrictions around Jalan Tun Jugah under Sarawak Metro's traffic plan effective from 11pm on October 7, with the arrangement expected to last about three months. Both slip roads between Jalan Tun Jugah and Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho are being narrowed to one lane. A lane at the Jalan Song traffic lights, before the right turn towards Jalan Tun Jugah, is also included in the closure plan. This is a reduction in available lanes, not a complete road closure. Sarawak Metro says at least one lane will remain open at the affected sections, so traffic from Jalan Song and Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho can still continue towards Tun Jugah and the city centre. Drivers should expect slower movement, especially at peak hours, and follow the signs at each work zone. The new phase accommodates bored-piling machinery and construction of piers for the elevated ART guideway between Tun Jugah and Upland stations on the KUTS Red Line. The three-month estimate concerns these traffic arrangements; it is not an ART service-opening date. For construction-traffic enquiries, the KUTS hotline is 1300-88-5887, Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm, excluding public holidays. Sarawak Metro says it will issue updates when diversions or lane arrangements change.

Drivers heading through central Kuching this morning face scheduled road closures or diversions around Padang Merdeka between 7am and 11am. The same rehearsal window applies tomorrow, October 7, under the police arrangements announced on September 26 and reported by DayakDaily. The October 5–7 rehearsals affect Jalan McDougall, Jalan Wawasan and sections of Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, including near Carpenter Street. These are morning rehearsal restrictions, not a notice that all city-centre roads are closed throughout the day. A full rehearsal follows on October 8, also from 7am to 11am. The October 10 parade and mass gathering have a separate 7am-to-noon traffic window. Jalan McDougall is also subject to the longer-running preparation closure announced ahead of the rehearsals, so the 11am rehearsal finish should not be read as a reopening promise for that road. Police advise using alternative routes and avoiding roadside parking in the affected area. Traffic enquiries can be directed to Kuching district police at 082-259900.

Police expect about 10,000 people to attend the programme. The affected points are Jalan Setia 1, the Jalan Ceria junction and the Jalan Wawasan roundabout. The event is scheduled for Oct 2–4, with police estimating up to 10,000 visitors at a time. Motorists are advised to avoid parking where it could block traffic and follow the directions of police and traffic-control personnel. Suggested parking areas include Menara Pehin Setia Raja, the Sarawak Government Administration Centre, Setia Raja Mosque and commercial centres. Drivers can use alternative routes during the closure period.

Drivers using Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin will face a changed temporary traffic arrangement from Sept 28, with the diversion scheduled to run until Jan 21, 2027, during construction. The Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) says the contractor will issue further updates if the affected dates, hours or areas change. The works contract runs from July 15, 2024 to Jan 21, 2027, so the new arrangement spans the coming months rather than a single weekend. Regular users should check LCDA’s latest notice before setting out and allow time for the altered route. For traffic enquiries or feedback, contact LCDA at 082-235944.

Repair and rehabilitation works are planned for damaged sections of two roads serving Bintulu Port and the Tanjung Kidurong industrial area. The roads identified by JKR Sarawak are the Jalan Bintulu/Tatau Junction (Mile 5)–Bintulu Port route and Jalan Tanjung Kidurong. Inspections found surface deterioration on several sections, with continuous heavy-vehicle movement cited as one contributing factor. The repair plan will take site conditions, safety requirements and traffic management into account. JKR also says the locations will be monitored during the works and motorists should follow signs and traffic-control instructions. No full closure timetable was announced in the update. For road users, the practical change is to stay alert for work zones around two routes that carry both public traffic and industrial logistics.

Part of Jalan Tun Razak will be closed nightly from Sept 9 to Nov 8 for tree-cutting work linked to Kuching’s ART project. The closure will run from 9.30pm to 4.30am throughout the 61-day period. The affected stretch is part of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Phase 1 Red Line, which is being developed between Kuching Sentral and Pending. The work is tied to the future dedicated ART corridor, so the disruption will affect late-night journeys through this busy Kuching route. Sarawak Metro said traffic-management and safety signs will be placed along the route. Drivers using Jalan Tun Razak at night should allow extra time, follow the temporary arrangements and watch for further notices if the work schedule changes.

Three traffic points near Simpang Tiga and Jalan Tun Jugah are scheduled to close from 8am to 5pm each day through Sunday, Sept 6. The daytime closures cover the slip road from Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho to Jalan Tun Jugah, part of the Simpang Tiga roundabout beside the EPF building, and the Jalan Jelutong junction into Jalan Tun Jugah. These are temporary arrangements for utilities relocation, not a permanent change to the road layout. Motorists moving between the city centre, Simpang Tiga and Jalan Tun Jugah should expect diversions at the work zones, follow signs on site and allow extra time. For a same-day check if site conditions change, Sarawak Metro lists its KUTS hotline as 1300 88 5887.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old over a video that appeared to show a motorcyclist performing a wheelie on Jalan Astana in Kuching. The footage, filmed in the direction of the Abang Kipali Roundabout, circulated on Facebook. Traffic police said they traced the motorcycle owner before the teenager came to the station on Aug 27 to assist with the investigation and was arrested. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for alleged reckless and dangerous driving. It remains at the investigation stage; police had not announced a charge or court outcome. Police warned that stunts on public roads can cause serious injury or death and may lead to legal action. Parents and guardians were also urged to pay attention to teenagers’ motorcycle use.

Targeted widening has started along Jalan Urat Mata as MBKS works on the route's busiest bottlenecks. The Kuching South City Council said work began on Aug 11 and is scheduled for completion on Jan 10, 2027. The revised plan covers about 600 metres on the right side from the Jalan Song junction towards Lorong 7, plus another 300 metres on the left from Lorong 3 towards Jalan Wan Alwi. The original proposal covered the entire 1.32-kilometre road, but the first phase is now focused on sections where extra lane space can make the biggest difference during peak hours. The work will stay within the existing 25-metre road reserve and does not require land acquisition. Jalan Urat Mata links Jalan Wan Alwi and Jalan Song, serving nearby homes, shops and major commercial areas. Motorists should slow down and watch for work zones as construction continues.

A RM2.34 million project will widen the traffic-light junction linking Jalan Ling Kai Cheng and Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah in Sibu. The work covers about 200 metres and is expected to begin in September, taking roughly four months. The existing two-lane junction will be reconfigured to handle through traffic, right turns and U-turns, with the aim of reducing queues heading towards Jalan Teku and vehicles turning into Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah. A separate RM350,000 upgrade will also cover 500 metres of Jalan Lilin and is expected to take one to two months if weather conditions hold. For Sibu commuters, the likely trade-off is short-term disruption before the junction becomes easier to use. Most work is planned for the afternoon and night, when traffic is lighter, but the exact start date and temporary lane arrangements have not yet been announced. Motorists should slow down near the work area and allow extra time once construction signs appear. The next useful update will be the local authority's traffic arrangement for the September start.

Sejingkat Bridge on track for an Oct 1 soft opening. The RM365.7 million Sejingkat Bridge is on track for a soft opening on Oct 1. The new crossing over the Sarawak River will provide a direct alternative for traffic from Serian and Kota Samarahan heading towards Petra Jaya and industrial areas on the northern side of the river. At present, that traffic has to pass through Kuching city centre, adding to congestion. Uggah described the bridge as a major game changer for Kuching. He said the contractor had not reported major manpower or funding concerns, while favourable weather had helped construction progress. [image: 1787134196672-sejingkat-bridge-resized.jpg] A target date or project announcement is not the same as an open road or operating facility. Until an official opening or traffic notice is issued, residents should keep using the current arrangements and watch for the next construction or approval milestone.

Kuching residents want growth that fixes daily life first [image: 1785546287138-kuching_growth_20260801.jpg] Source: The Borneo Post / Edgar Ong Kuching's growth is bringing a clear message from residents: more jobs, better public transport, smarter traffic planning, cleaner neighbourhoods and stronger support for local businesses. The Borneo Post spoke to six residents for Kuching City Day. Their concerns were practical: young Sarawakians need career options at home, road capacity must match new developments, and public facilities must keep up with the city's expansion. What residents raised Location: Kuching Details: Residents pointed to jobs, public transport, road maintenance, cleanliness, CCTV coverage, local business support and environmental care. Business owner Lau Lee Leong said traffic impact should be planned before major projects are approved, especially in areas already facing congestion. A section of Jalan Tun Jugah from the CityOne traffic-light junction towards Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho is scheduled for partial closure from July 29 to Dec 31, 2026 for KUTS construction. [image: 1785384236632-tun_jugah_cityone_20260730.jpg] Image: Sarawak Metro via DayakDaily Sarawak Metro said the temporary diversion is needed for work under the Kuching Urban Transportation System. The notice covers a partial closure, not a complete shutdown of Jalan Tun Jugah. What drivers should plan for Traffic arrangements can change as work moves, so the map and signs on site take priority over an old social-media screenshot. Drivers should reduce speed before the work zone, follow lane arrows and temporary limits, and avoid changing lanes at the last moment. CityOne, Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho and surrounding businesses remain reachable, but travel time may be less predictable during weekday peak hours, school traffic and major events. If an appointment matters, allow an extra buffer or check an alternative route before leaving. Sarawak Metro said it would announce changes to the schedule or traffic plan. Enquiries can be made through the KUTS hotline at 1300-88-5887, Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm excluding public holidays, or by email at [email protected] and [email protected]. This post is valid for the announced July 29–Dec 31 construction period. After that date, verify the latest notice instead of assuming the diversion remains in place. A smart traffic light trial has started at the Jalan Salim/Jalan Bukit Penyau T-junction in Sibu. [image: 1785373583494-sibu_smart_traffic_20260730.jpg] The temporary system began its month-long trial after its electricity metre was connected on Tuesday. Trial operations started at about 8am on Wednesday. Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the lights use sensors to detect vehicles. If no vehicles are waiting to exit Jalan Bukit Penyau, traffic along Jalan Salim can continue moving. What drivers should know The system is still being fine-tuned. Chieng said several adjustments are needed, including extending the lane and relocating a streetlight pole so vehicles turning into Jalan Bukit Penyau do not block straight-moving traffic. A yellow box is also planned to improve road safety at the junction. Sarawak Metro said the diversion is to make way for Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) construction works. The arrangement is scheduled to run until Jan 23, 2027. What road users need to know The affected stretch is in front of the Tabuan Jaya Custom Housing Quarters. Kuching police arrested one rider, impounded 24 motorcycles and issued 129 summonses during an overnight operation against illegal street racing at Jalan Astana. [image: 1784455512760-jalan-astana-street-racing.jpeg] Photo: Sarawak Tribune The operation ran near the Petronas station from 11.30pm on July 18 until 3am on July 19. A senior officer and 11 personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division inspected 92 people and 80 motorcycles. A 22-year-old local man was detained for suspected reckless and dangerous riding under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. His motorcycle was seized for further action. Another 24 motorcycles were impounded under Section 60, while the summonses covered various traffic offences. Why the numbers matter The arrest was one part of a wider enforcement operation. An impounded motorcycle does not automatically mean every owner was racing; police may hold a vehicle for inspection or action over roadworthiness, registration or modifications. Likewise, a summons is an allegation or notice that still follows the legal process. For residents around Jalan Astana, the main issue is the risk created by high-speed riding late at night: shorter reaction time, noise and danger to other road users who are not part of the activity. Suspected racing should be reported with the exact location, time, direction of travel and vehicle details only when it is safe to observe them. Do not chase or confront riders. This article records the July 18–19 operation and is not a claim that enforcement is happening at the location right now. The five motorcycles were seized because their road tax and insurance had expired. RTD said enforcement will continue across Sarawak, especially on offences that can affect road safety. [image: 1784282669702-mile7-parking.jpeg] Drivers at Kuching's Mile 7 commercial area are asking for clearer parking and traffic markings after complaints over confusing roadside spaces. Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, said the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) should review the traffic and parking situation in the area. He said some wide roadside stretches do not have clear road lines or no-parking indicators. Because of that, motorists may think they can park there, only to receive summonses later. Why it matters Kong said several business operators have put up their own no-parking signs because the official markings are unclear. But he said traffic regulation should not fall on individual shops. He urged MPP to assess the Mile 7 commercial area and carry out proper road marking works, including visible traffic lines and parking indicators, so road users are not misled.
