If Muara Tebas is usually your seafood stop, I would change the order once: go up to Ching San Yen Temple, also known as Green Hill Temple, before lunch, then come back down hungry. The climb, red walls, gold roof details and open feeling around the river delta make it a satisfying half-day detour, but not a place that needs a full day on its own.

This is an active temple rather than a staged visitor attraction. The steps are not a comfortable match for luggage or limited mobility, so I would wear shoes with grip, avoid the hottest part of the day and allow around 30–60 minutes for the climb, worship space and details. A clear-weather visit rewards the drive from Kuching; heavy rain or midday heat can make the same stop feel much harder.

Driving or taking a ride-hail is the practical choice from central Kuching, and a return ride may need planning. Pair it with seafood around Muara Tebas, while remembering that parking, ceremonies and crowd levels can change on festival days. There is generally no standard admission ticket, but a small amount of cash is sensible for donations or busy-period parking.

There is also a timely change to keep in mind. In May 2026, the Kuching Hokkien Association received a Mazu divided spirit statue from Meizhou’s ancestral temple and announced an opening ceremony for the new Mazu Temple at Muara Tebas on 18 October. That may mean ceremonies, new displays, altered access or heavier crowds around the date; older guides cannot promise that every corner will look or operate the same. Check the same-day map listing and temple or event notices, and follow the on-site route when worship is underway.

Travellers who enjoy living religious places, traditional architecture and a small-town detour will find enough here to justify the drive. Those seeking air-conditioning, flat paths and a quick photo may not enjoy the stairs, heat and etiquette. Dress respectfully, do not block worshippers, and ask before taking indoor photos.

I would use Ching San Yen as the first chapter of a Muara Tebas morning, then let lunch finish the route. Check for a ceremony or temporary restriction before setting out, and the temple’s quieter character has a better chance of surviving the visit.
