For a first Kuching walk I would start at the river, cross Main Bazaar, then turn into Carpenter Street. The covered five-foot ways make the route kinder in heat and rain. Main Bazaar grew as old Kuching's river-facing trading edge; Carpenter Street kept trades, food and family businesses. The 1884 Great Fire destroyed 135 houses here, and the rebuilt rows are the heritage scene visitors see today.

Browse pua kumbu, beadwork, woodcraft and pepper with questions about provenance, then look for medicine halls, goldsmiths and cafes rather than treating the area as a themed mall. It suits travellers wanting context and small purchases; shoppers expecting fixed hours or a polished attraction may be disappointed.

Walk from the Waterfront. Allow 90 minutes for a loop or half a day with coffee and food. Shops keep different hours and event parking tightens; carry small cash and ask before photographing interiors. Map: https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Main+Bazaar+Carpenter+Street+Kuching
