A late-night fire damaged about 80% of the Giatmara Kuching building at Taman Budaya, with no casualties reported. The Fire and Rescue Department said it received the call at 11.10pm on Aug 31. Firefighters from Padungan responded, with support from the Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya stations. The building measured about 50 by 50 feet. The blaze was brought under control at 12.08am and the operation ended at 1.41am. The cause and total losses remain under investigation. Anyone with classes or business at the centre should confirm the latest arrangement with Giatmara before going there, and keep away from the damaged area.
