The pedestrian mall remains a working shopping street. Fabric, clothing, jewellery, household goods and small food businesses matter more here than staged photo spots. That everyday function is the reason I would keep it in an old-Kuching route.

Set the right expectation

Visitor feedback is mixed in a useful way. Some people enjoy the shade, prices and older shopfronts; others find the street quieter than expected. Both can be true. Come for browsing and street texture, not a guaranteed festival atmosphere.

Look beyond the main covered stretch. Gambier Street, the riverside, Masjid India area and nearby lanes make the walk more complete. Be respectful around places of worship and ask before photographing shopkeepers or customers at close range.

How I would plan it

• Start from Plaza Merdeka or the Old Court House side
• Browse India Street, then continue towards Gambier Street and the Waterfront
• Go in the morning or early afternoon when more independent shops are likely to be open
• Individual businesses keep their own hours; do not rely on one listing for the whole street
• Bring small cash if you plan to buy inexpensive items
• Allow 20–40 minutes for India Street itself, longer when combined with surrounding lanes

Would I drive across Kuching for India Street alone? Probably not. Would I include it in a half-day old-town walk? Definitely. Its strength is how naturally it connects several parts of the city.
